How to Clean & Care for Suede Shoes

At Classic Shoe Valet & Co., we know suede is often misunderstood—and often mistreated. Too many people rely on harsh, chemical-laden cleaners or quick-fix sprays that do more harm than good. We’re here to offer something better.
Suede’s biggest vulnerability is staining, which is why spray-on protectors are so widely used. But while these can offer basic surface protection, they’re not great for long-term care. The truth is: suede can be cleaned gently and thoroughly—and the good news without aggressive solvents.
Contrary to popular belief, water isn’t the enemy. Yes, if applied unevenly, water can stain suede. But when used properly across the whole surface, it becomes a powerful ally in refreshing and restoring your suede footwear.
So whether you're ready to invest in premium suede products or looking for an alternative with items you may already have at home, I will lay out two trusted methods we use at Classic Shoe Valet & Co.—that are both safe, effective, and crafted with care.

Option 1: With Saphir Médaille d'Or Suede Products
What You’ll Need:
• A pair of shoe tree
• Saphir Omni'Nettoyant Suede Shampoo (comes with a mini brush)
• Horsehair brush (for applying the shampoo)
• Second dry horsehair brush (for brushing suede after cleaning)
• Suede brush (we prefer Crepe over brass)
• Clean microfiber cloth
• A water bowl with approx. 100ml of clean water
Optional but Recommended:
• Saphir Renovating Spray (for moisture and color restoration)
• Saphir Invulner Spray (for water/stain protection)
• Saphir Suede Eraser (for dry scuff removal)
The Saphir Method:
1. Insert shoe trees to retain shape.
2. Mix one part Omni'Nettoyant with two parts water in a bowl.
3. Dip the brush into the solution and apply in circular motions across the suede.
4. While suede is wet, use a suede brush to gently lift dirt and grime.
5. Let it dry naturally. No heaters or sunlight—just shade and patience.
6. Brush the nap once dry with a clean brush, restoring the soft texture.
7. Finish with Renovating Spray to replenish color and Invulner Spray for protection.

Option 2: Without Specialized Products (The I Don't Have All That Cool Saphir Product Approach)
What You’ll Need:
- A pair of shoe trees
- A sea wool sponge (ideal for even soaking)
- A nylon-bristle fingernail brush
- Bottled or clean tap water
- A tablespoon of a coconut-oil-based shampoo (I use the Sprouts Market Brand named Desert Essence, which i included a photo of)
- Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovator Spray (optional but the perfect touch for finishing)
This Method:
- Insert shoe trees.
- Mix one tablespoon of coconut oil based shampoo into two cups of water. Never apply shampoo directly to suede.
- Soak the sea wool sponge (not dripping) and blot the entire suede surface to evenly saturate.
- While wet, scrub gently with the nylon brush to work out stains and dirt.
- Let dry naturally in a ventilated, shaded area.
- Once dry, brush the nap with a clean suede brush to restore texture.
- For extra moisture and finish, apply Saphir Renovator Spray.

Whichever route you choose, the goal is the same: to restore your suede without damaging it, and to do so with intention and care. These are the methods we trust and use on some of the finest footwear in the world. And yes—it makes a difference.
